Your Update Service Questions Answered
* What happens after 365 days?
If you don't upgrade again the Update Service expires. Any online services will cease, or fall back to a basic service. For current 365 products this means:
- Web Designer: The free hosting and free Online Designer continue, but the Online Content Catalog will no longer be accessible†
- Web Designer Premium: The M hosting falls back to the free hosting offer, the Premium Xara Online Designer falls back to the free Online Designer, the Online Content Catalog will no longer be accessible†
- Designer Pro: The M hosting falls back to the free hosting offer, the Premium Xara Online Designer falls back to the free Online Designer, the Online Content Catalog will no longer be accessible†
- Photo & Graphic Designer: The Online Content Catalog will no longer be accessible†
In addition you will no longer receive feature or content updates. The copy(s) that you have installed at the time of expiry will continue to run indefinitely, BUT if you re-install on a new machine after the Update Service has expired then the new installation will fall back to the version you last purchased. How much will it cost to renew?
You can expect the cost to be similar to the current cost of upgrading. Note, this isn't a subscription
, there won't be an automatic recharge, you will make a choice as usual about whether to upgrade your copy and extend the Update Service for another 365 days. Why are you doing this?
It is as frustrating for us as it is for you to sit on new features and content that would keep our product in a market leading position and our customers happy! Design is a fast moving business and we need a model that recognises that.
Additionally the annual release cycle imposes a huge burden on developers, testers and support during the couple of months in which our key titles are upgraded, which can mean we provide a lower quality of service than we would wish during that time. By spreading the new feature releases across the year you will benefit from a more consistent level of pre-release testing and post-release support, and we will sleep more easily. Win win!
In other words we are trying to bring you some of the benefits of the subscription model without actually offering a subscription.
A further practical consideration is that Xara Online Designer is progressing rapidly, future updates in Online Designer will frequently require matching updates to Web Designer to ensure file and feature compatibility, and we therefore need a model for our client side products that is more in tune with the release cycle of Online Designer. When do my 365 days start?
At the time of registration. If you order in the Xara online store then your copy is registered at the time of purchase, so only if you purchase offline might your date of registration be later than the date of purchase. How will I find out about new features?
Our noticeboards will announce new updates, and we will have further information on our What's New pages for Web Designer
and Designer Pro
and Photo & Graphic Designer
and in our monthly newsletter, the Outsider (you can sign up for the Outsider here
). Alternatively you might like to join us on Facebook
or follow us on Twitter
.† How does the new Online Content Catalog / Local Designs Gallery work?
In Designer Pro, Web Designer and Photo & Graphic Designer 365 the Designs Gallery only shows content that you have used, whereas the Online Content
Catalog contains the full set of designs. When you select any design from the
Content Catalog it's downloaded and installed on your computer, and will appear in the Local Designs Gallery, where you can access it in future, even offline. So if you know
you're going to want to access a specific category of designs regularly and
want offline access, right click on the folder
(nb you must have downloaded at least one design for this folder
to appear) in the Local Designs Gallery and select 'Download All'. Or of course you can add a back-up DVD to your order. The DVD includes the full set of templates at the time we launched the 365 version.
