Animated GIF options
When you create or export an animated GIF there are several options you can set to control the animation. You set these up using the Frame Gallery Properties dialog box or wait until you export the animation (Options on the Animated GIF Export dialog box).
- Delay: gives the delay in centiseconds between each frame. If you want a
delay of a second between each frame, enter a value of 100. Remember that many browsers
display the frames quite slowly and may not be able to keep up with the value you set.
You can also set individual delays on a frame by frame basis. If you do, the Delay field in Animation Loop and Speed reads "many". Typing a value into this field overrides any individual frame values you set up.
- Loop: the number of times that the GIF should be displayed. A
value of zero means 'loop continuously', but note that Netscape Navigator
also takes any value other than one also to mean 'loop continuously'. Therefore, in
Navigator your animation will play once, or forever. Other browsers
may take more notice of this field, though, so if you mean 'loop forever',
select 'loop continuously'.
- Palette: as described previously you can often make animated GIFs much smaller by saving them with fewer than 256 colors. You may need to experiment to find the best combination of number of colors and dithering.
Note that there is a problem on Apple Macs if you use optimized palette per frame. Macs often display totally the wrong colors for per frame palettes. We recommend not using this option if your animations will get viewed on Macs.
